From the dirt road, you have a great view of the collapsed buildings.
Tim Cooper found rich ore up Bay Horse Creek in 1877. In 1880, a five stamp, water powered mill and a twenty-five ton smelter were built.

Six charcoal kilns were built. The operation of a smelter required that large amounts of charcoal be burned to produce the intense heat necessary to melt out the silver and lead.
