Broken Hills was never a rich, nor was it a wild town, as so many were. Gold discoveries were the reason for the town being built in 1913 and over a span of several years about $75'000 worth of ore was mined.

Grave of Matt Costello is lonely one on top of knoll. After life of grinding poverty he made good strike, sold claim for $1'500. Few days later he was found dead, sitting at his table. Friends buried him near cabin all traces of which have vanished.
